Spirituals (or Negro spirituals) are generally Christian songs that were created by African slaves in the United States. Spirituals were originally an oral tradition that imparted Christian values while also describing the hardships of slavery. Although spirituals were originally unaccompanied monophonic (unison) songs, they are best known today in harmonized choral arrangements. This historic group of uniquely American songs is now recognized as a distinct genre of music.

黒人霊歌とは、アメリカの黒人奴隷によって作られたキリスト教賛歌。もともとは、伝統的な口頭歌謡にキリスト教的な価値観が加えられたもので、奴隷生活の厳しさもまた一方で表現された。元来は、伴奏を伴わない単声の歌であったが、現在では、調和合唱の曲として知られている。
Gospelの起源
Spiritualsは、黒人奴隷たちの間で、口頭で伝えられた民謡に、キリスト教の讃美歌の影響が加わってできた宗教音楽。日本語では、黒人霊歌と訳されている。だが、必ずしもキリスト教に関わるものだけを指すのものではないようだ。生活苦や悲哀を歌ったものも多い。
この音楽誕生の背景には、当時の黒人奴隷たちの置かれた厳しい生活がある。
楽器を手に入れることができなかったため、自らの歌声のみを頼りとした。謡われた内容も、自らの厳しい境遇からの救いを求めたものが多く、悲しい歴史を背負っている。現代のGospel Musicは、この黒人霊歌を起源として発展していった。
動画は、Louis Armstrongによる”When The Saints Go Marching In”。この曲は、今では、Jazz Bandの名曲として知られているが、もともとは、19世紀末ごろから知られている最も古い黒人霊歌のひとつ。
