Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Most of the singing was done a cappella.

ゴスペルとは、声楽を中心とした音楽。多くの場合、合唱を伴う。キリスト教的な歌詞が歌われる。この音楽は、17世紀初頭にまで遡ることができ、黒人間で口頭で伝わった民謡にその起源がある。
讃美歌や聖歌では、呼応式の合唱が繰り返される。多くの教会では、手拍子や足踏みが伴われ、アカペラ形式で歌われる。
Gospelの意味
Gospelとは、福音という意味。しかし、現在では、Black Musicの多様な発展を受けて、Gospelの形式も歌詞の内容も多彩化していて、宗教音楽や声楽にとらわれない幅広い分野でGospel Musicという言葉が使われている。
しかし、救いをテーマとすること、声楽を強調すること、という基本は、GospelのIdentityとして今でも継承されている。
